Along with Hera and Athena, Aphrodite takes part in a beauty competition judged by Paris. Priam King of Troy and defender of his son, Paris, Priam is killed by Achilles' son during the sacking of Troy. It sees her being paired with Ares, for instance, not because they are similarly warlike but precisely because love and war are opposites. He leads the Greeks but also quarrels with Achilles, at one point taking Achilles' favorite slave. Force of arms had been unsuccessful, so they turned to oracles increasingly.
Apollo gave her the gift of prophecy while trying to make love to her, but she had taken a vow of chastity and resisted him. However, everybody was now reluctant to land, as an oracle had once prophesized that the first Greek to step on Trojan soil would be the first one to die in the war. Nor could one say her girt of glorious speed was more surpassing than her loveliness. Now, had no medical knowledge whatsoever, so he was quite surprised when approached him with his request. Strauss says the Greeks fought like the Shardana and although not Shardana, did indeed fight in the Egyptian army. Before the night was over, Troy was captured, most of its population enslaved, and the city destroyed. Physical Beauty was a great thing for Greeks. But there, instead of a marriage, Agamemnon performed the deadly ritual. But at the close of the 19th century archaeologists led by Heinrich Schliemann found the remains of a great citadel that existed on the Western shore of Asia Minor, the traditional location of Troy, and which appeared to be overrun in a great war around the year 1250 B. On the divine level the story makes equal sense. Agamemnon had already received an oracle from Delphi that Troy would fall when the best of the Greeks quarreled.
Aphrodite promptly dropped Aeneas, who was rescued by Apollo, another Olympian sponsor of the Trojans. Victory had its price though. The opposition of the Greeks is brave; but Hector breaks the rough gate with a rock, and the stream of enemies pours itself unimpeded into the camp. Only the efforts of Ajax and Odysseus saved Achilles' body from the Trojans. Women were not citizens and could not vote or hold office. In the series, the contest is altered somewhat with and entering but is the third goddess contestant instead of Hera offering the one who chooses her the chance to be renowned as a great warrior.
Paris promptly awarded the golden apple to Aphrodite, who in turn enabled him to elope with Helen, who thenceforth became notorious as Helen of Troy. Dreams and oracles reveal the will of the gods, but inspired fighting shows the gods' favor. That night the soldiers crept from the horse, killed the sentries, and opened the gates to let the Greek army in. This is not a killing blow. In Homer it is simply the rape of Helen which is the occasion of the war.
Athens had the worlds first democracy. Olympus had been invited except Eris, the goddess of discord. But Agamemnon saw through Odysseus' ruse and Odysseus tricked Achilles into revealing himself, and so, all the leaders who had promised to join did so. The slighted goddess happened to a specialist in sowing discord, so she maliciously deposited a golden apple on the banquet table. Anyway, after she had completed the ritual — so as to be even safer — disguised as a girl and hid him among the maidens at the court of King Lycomedes of Skyros. In the movie Troy, he is Achilles' cousin.
Yet Hector bore the knowledge that both he and his city were doomed. In Greek, the word is καλλίστῃ the of the of καλος,. But the entire legend of the Trojan War bears that same tragic stamp. Menelaus is winning when Paris is whisked away by the goddess. Palamedes was stoned to death as a result.
Paris was offered wisdom and skill in battle by Athena. The Trojan War is assembled by a number of sources and in which some of them state contradictory accounts of the event. Discussed in more detail in connection with --who was one of the leaders of the Greek Achaean side of the Trojan War--is the importance of hospitality in the ancient world. Although Menelaus and Helen return to Sparta and witness their daughter's marriage to Neoptolemus, all is not rosy there, and brother dies at his wife's hands. While these stories are terrific works of ancient Greek literature, for hundreds of years they were considered entirely fictional.
On learning that he would possess Helen, Paris first went to Troy and established himself as a true prince, the legitimate son of Priam and Hecuba. Strauss has made a point of Achilles' speed, so it is odd that Achilles doesn't catch up with Hector and odder yet that Strauss doesn't mention this. In Achilles' attack on Thebes-Under-Plakos, Chryseis was taken and given to Agamemnon as a prize. An assembly of all male citizens would pass the laws, at the height of its power, Athens had the most advanced democracy in Greece. Later Achilles meets his death after he forces his way inside the walls of Troy.
